ocr: What is a chain hoist? A chain hoist looks very similar to a pulley system. GEARS. CHAIN LOAD. Ifyou look closely at the hoist, you'll see that the chain passing over the pulleys is a loop. And unlike a pulley system, a chain hoist makes forces bigger using gears. The tWo pulleys at the top are ditterent sizes, but turn at the same rate because they are on the same shaft. This means that a force pulling on the chain passing over the larger hoist becomes a larger force in the chain passing over the smaller pulley.
